PUBLIC NOTICE Savannah Coastal Refuge Complex Savannah National Wildlife Refuge The United States Fish & Wildlife Service (Service) is evaluating a proposal to haul material which was previously dredged off the bottom of the Savannah River from a confined disposal area located on Onslow Island, part of the Savannah NWR. The dredge material is primarily sand. The removal of the material is a management practice needed for extending the life of the disposal area, returning areas on Onslow Island back to natural grade, and creating wetlands for wildlife within the area. Prior to allowing this use on Onslow Island, Federal law requires that the Service first determine that the removal of dredged material from this confined disposal area is a compatible use. A compatible use is any use on a national wildlife refuge, which based on sound professional judgment, will not materially interfere with or detract from the fulfillment of the National Wildlife Refuge System mission or the purposes for establishing the refuge. The Service develops a compatibility determination to facilitate evaluation of proposed refuge use, including anticipated impacts and stipulations necessary to ensure compatibility. A draft compatibility determination has been written for the proposed use and is currently available for public review and comment. The Service would like to know what you think about this proposed refuge use. We are especially interested in information you have, or studies you are aware of, regarding the effects of such use. The draft compatibility determination is available for public review starting June 16, 2012 until June 30, 2012 at refuge headquarters, located at 694 Beech Hill Lane Hardeeville, South Carolina 29927. All comments received within 14 days following the date of this notice will be considered in finalizing this compatibility determination. We hope to make a final decision on this proposed use within 14 days following the closure of the public comment period. To request a copy of the compatibility determination, learn the final decision regarding this proposed use, or for more information, contact the U.S. Fish & Wildlife's Savannah Office at (843) 784-9911. Written Comments should be received no later than 14 days following the date of this notice and should be addressed to: Project Leader, Savannah Coastal Refuge Complex, 694 Beech Hill Lane, Hardeeville, South Carolina, 29927.
