PUBLIC NOTICE
NOTICE is hereby given to the public to advise interested citizens that the Talbot County School District has made a submission to the Attorney General of the United States under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, 79 Stat. 437, as amended, seeking preclearance for a special election to be held on November 6, 2012. The purpose of the special election is to seek approval for the continuation of the sales and use tax for education currently in effect in Talbot County in the amount of 1% for five years, for the following purpose: (i) to retire the remaining principal and interest on the School District's previously incurred general obligation Series 2003 Bonds coming due in the years 2013 through 2018 in the amount of $2,450,870, and (ii) to purchase instructional and administrative technology, buses and transportation equipment, textbooks, vocational, fine arts and physical education equipment, safety and security equipment, and to make improvements to all other educational facilities (the "Projects") at a maximum cost of $949,130.
A complete duplicate copy of the submission is available for public inspection during normal business hours at the offices of the Talbot County School District located at 945 N Washington Ave., Talbotton, GA 31827.
Any interested person or group may send the Attorney General information they may have as to whether or not this change has a discriminatory purpose or effect.
Communications may be in the form of a letter stating the name, address and telephone number of the individual or group and should be mailed to Chief, Voting Section, Civil Rights Division, Room 7254 - NWB, Department of Justice, 950 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W., Washington, DC 20530. The envelope and first page should be marked: Comment under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.
